This is a very brief history of K9 Tenerife – who we are and what we do.
K9 Tenerife is a Spanish Registered Charity (Nº 3147) run by volunteers in the South of Tenerife. The purpose of the organisation is to protect and rehome, to the best of our ability, animals from cruelty, starvation and neglect, and to neuter and spay where possible to avoid over population. The refuge receives no official government funding and we rely solely on you, the public, for donations and sponsorships.
We were formed in 1993 (our official title is Refugio de Los Animales – K9) by three women residents in the South of Tenerife, who were moved by the plight of the poor and neglected abandoned animals on the island. At first the rescued dogs and cats were kept in kennels that had been constructed by friends and volunteers on some land belonging to one of the founder members. K9 Tenerife raised funds for the upkeep of the animals by organising Car Boot Sales, Dinner dances, the placing of Collection Boxes in Bars and the collection of funds at the local markets.
The raised funds never seemed to be enough. There were always more and more animals, more food, and more operations required than there were funds to cover the costs. It was a continuous struggle!
Since then, K9 Tenerife has continued with its work and has received much help from other similar organisations, both here and abroad.
Today, K9 Tenerife has a committee of elected members who meet regularly to consider and deal with the ongoing needs of the organisation. our President, Elsie Clinton-Leslie, one of our founding members, heads the committee up.
There are also other non-committee helpers, including Rescuers, Car Boot Helpers, Dog Walkers, Kennel Hands, and Fund Raisers to name but a few, and we are always looking for more volunteers – there are never enough helpers!
(If you can spare some time and would like to work with us, please get in touch for a chat)
We own kennels near Las Chafiras in the South of Tenerife which are suitable for housing around 55 to 60 dogs comfortably, although most days we have upwards of 75 in our care!
There is a large variety of pedigree and non-pedigree dogs at the kennels, large and small, all colours and all ages from little puppies to fully grown dogs – every one of them looking forward to finding their loving home. Can you help?
Helped by volunteers our, out cattery was built and opened in 2007. Extended over the years, we now have indoor and outoodr space for our cats and kittens to explore while they Cattery and so at last we have somewhere to look after our abandoned cats and kittens while they await their new homes.
Although we deal primarily with dogs and cats, we will do our best, with our very limited resources, to care for any animal that needs help.
All donations are made via PayPal and we accept all major credit cards should you not have a Paypal account.
